By Lisa Lewis

Scott Redding snatched his first grand prix pole position with a mighty final lap of Moto2 qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas.

It was also the first pole for his Marc VDS team.

The Briton's nearest challenger was fellow Kalex rider Takaaki Nakagami, left 0.689 seconds behind for Italtrans.

It is the second successive race weekend that the Japanese rider has found himself pipped for pole in the dying seconds after he lost out in Qatar to Pol Espargaro.

Nico Terol continued to show form in the U.S. rounds. The three time 125cc winner at Indianapolis had his best ever Moto2 qualification in third and takes his first front row start since making the move into the class.

The Spaniard was also the top Suter qualifier as Kalex once again showed domination with seven machines inside the top ten.

Tito Rabat qualified well ahead of his Tuenti HP 40 Pons Kalex team-mate Pol Espargaro in fourth.

Championship leader Espargaro once again suffered a frustrating session, the majority of which was spent in the middle of the timesheets before a late push moved him to seventh - dashing his hopes of a sixth successive pole.

The spots between the Pons riders went to Swiss racer Dominique Aegerter who lost the front end of his Technomag carXpert early in the sessionbut recovered for fifth and NGM Mobile Racing rider Simone Corsi in sixth.

Desguaces La Torre Zelos rider Xavier Simeon, the second Marc VDS bike of Mika Kallio and Julian Simon on the Italtrans complete the top ten.

Just missing out after a strong qualifying performance was Australian rider Ant West who held on to eleventh for the QMMF Racing squad.

British riders Kyle Smith and Danny Kent both enjoyed a much improved qualifying. Kent finished 13th for Tech3 and Smith 19th for Blusens Avintia.

Jir Motobi rider Mike Di Meglio and last seasons Moto3 champion Sandro Cortese crashed within seconds of each other with five minutes of the session left. They will start from 18th and 20th respectively.

Toni Elias also crashed out with one minute remaining and starts 16th.

Interwetten's Tom Luthi will not finish the Austin weekend as the pain from his injuries proved too much for him after the Friday practice sessions.
