Austin MotoGP: Spies 'We've taken a backward step'

20 April 2013

Texan Ben Spies was far from happy after qualifying in 12th position for the Austin MotoGP at the Circuit of the Americas.

The Ignite Pramac Ducati rider feels he took a backward step during qualifying after earning is place in Q2 when he bettered his time from Friday by over a second.

However, Spies admitted his disappointment when several changes to his Desmosedici failed to have the desired effect as he prepares for his home race.

“I'm not happy at all. We made some changes to the bike this morning and I kind of went backwards,” he said.

“I'm pretty disappointed, but realistically, if the bike setting would've been good, we only would have been one row ahead, so it doesn't make a big difference.

“We need to look at some data to try to figure it out and get a good start and try to be in the top ten in the race again,” he added.

“I struggle a little bit in the hard braking zones, but anyway, I'm giving a 100% like always.”

Spies' time was 0.304s behind Bradley Smith on the Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1 and a second-and-a-half down on Nicky Hayden on the factory Ducati in tenth.
