MotoGP Jerez: Final corner goes to Lorenzo…

2 May 2013

Reigning double MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo will have the final corner of the Jerez circuit, venue for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, named in his honour.

The official ceremony to rename Turn 13, previously known as 'Ducados', will be held on Saturday, the day of Lorenzo's 26th birthday.

"For me to receive this is so special. Even more than the world championship," revealed Lorenzo. "A few can win the championship, but there are even less with a corner to their name.

"Jerez was the first 'pro' track were I rode at the age of 10. I also made my debut here in 125cc, eleven years ago. Jerez will always represent something special for me. The first lap I will make tomorrow with my M1 is going to be terrific.

"I guess I can't avoid to think of it tomorrow, when I enter that corner, but I also hope to forget it quickly, because I need to be concentrated! I really hope the grandstands will be packed this weekend!"

Lorenzo, already Spain's most successful rider ever in the premier-class, has won at Jerez twice in the 250cc class (2006 and 2007) and twice in MotoGP (2010 and 2011).

Among those to congratulate Lorenzo was five time 500cc champion Mick Doohan, whose own career ended with an accident at Jerez in 1999. The Australian sent the following tweet to Lorenzo: “You deserve it buddy, great corner, great track and a great rider. Three of the best!!”

Lorenzo, winner of round one in Qatar, is currently tied at the top of the 2013 standings with rookie countryman Marc Marquez.
