MotoGP Jerez: Smith betters test pace, 14th overall

3 May 2013

Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith has taken heart from his opening salvo at Jerez after the series newcomer bettered his time from the winter test at the Spanish venue.

Smith was 14th fastest overall on his satellite M1, 1.4s off the leading time set by Jorge Lorenzo on the factory Yamaha.

The 22-year-old boosted his time from the morning session, when he was 17th, by over a second to climb the leaderboard in FP2 on a warmer track and appeared content with his day's work.

“The nice thing about today is I was able to go a little bit faster than I managed at the test, so the gap to the front is still quite similar,” said Smith, who best lap was 1m 40.990s.

“I haven't lost anything but I'm a little bit disappointed that I didn't gain anything as well.

“I am a lot happier after this afternoon's session though and my main focus was on trying to ride the bike in a smoother way.”

Smith is continuing to work on his riding style to suit the characteristics of a MotoGP racer following his switch from the Moto2 class.

“It is so important to be smooth on a MotoGP bike and I'm still working on that,” he said.

“I'm losing most of my time in sector four and we'll check some data and see where I can improve.

“But it was another good day of learning and I'm looking forward to taking another step forward tomorrow.”
