Ducati: No new bike at Mugello

"So far the lab bike is still a lab bike, still experimental" - Bernhard Gobmeier, Ducati.
Ducati Corse general manager Bernhard Gobmeier denied that an updated version of the Desmosedici will be available at Catalunya next month.

After struggling to achieve success during two years with superstar Valentino Rossi, Ducati opted to avoid any rash design changes for 2013, beginning the season with a lightly modified version of last year's bike.

But a development 'lab' bike has also been in frequent use with test rider Michele Pirro, who also raced the machine during a wild-card appearance at Jerez.

Factory stars Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso have previously described the 'lab' machine as a step in the right direction, but not a big change and Gobmeier indicated there are no plans in place for any radical changes in the forthcoming events.

“I don't know where these rumours always come from,” said Gobmeier of a possible new bike at Barcelona. “On the 'lab bike' we change things to try them out, and we certainly wait until we have found a better solution or something that is really worthwhile to bring to a race. So far the lab bike is still a lab bike, still experimental and we will update it as soon as we have something worthwhile.”

Pirro will again race the lab bike as a wild-card at Mugello this weekend.

Reflecting on the season so far, Gobmeier added: “It was clear to everybody that it would be a very hard task. There was a lot of hard work done without the progress and success we expected and now we have to catch up. Of course the other teams and riders are making progress as well, so it is even harder.

“On the other side, let's say we are content with the progress - we can see we are going forward - but we don't over promise anything. The only thing we can promise is to work very very hard to achieve our goals.”

Dovizioso and Hayden are sixth and eighth in the standings ahead of Ducati's home event. Dovizioso came agonisingly close to claiming Ducati's first podium of the post-Rossi era during the wet round at Le Mans, losing third place to Marc Marquez on the penultimate lap.
