Lorenzo pips Rossi in FP2

But it was Yamaha team-mate and home hero Valentino Rossi who led most of the 45-minutes, only losing out to Lorenzo by 0.034s on the Spaniard's final lap after a session that saw rookies Marc Marquez and Bradley Smith taken to the medical centre.

Second in the championship Marquez is reported to have “escaped serious injury” after getting out of shape on the brakes at the end of the 200mph main straight, causing him to veer to the left and then fall from his Repsol Honda after running onto the grass.

Smith was sent to the medical centre after a big highside from his Tech 3 Yamaha and is being examined for a possible left arm injury. Smith's countryman and team-mate Cal Crutchlow completed an all-M1 practice top three, just 0.297s from Lorenzo, with Ducati's Nicky Hayden next best but over one-second from Lorenzo.

Just 19th quickest in the damp morning session, Rossi had blasted out of the blocks in the dry afternoon outing, setting the fastest lap ten times in the opening 38 minutes.

The Italian legend, unbeaten at Mugello from 2002-2008, then lost out to last year's winner Lorenzo before reclaiming the top spot with a minute to go, meaning Friday honours would be decided by their final laps.

Lorenzo then improved, while Rossi did not and that was enough to put the #99 on top.

Crutchlow's best also came on his penultimate lap, while Hayden was the first of four Ducatis in the top ten at the factory's home event. The 2006 world champion edged out this year's title leader Pedrosa by 0.006s for fourth, with Pramac Ducati rookie Andrea Iannone an impressive sixth quickest and within 0.1s of Hayden.

After a heavy morning fall, Hayden's factory team-mate Andrea Dovizioso took seventh place (+1.168s) with wild-card Michele Pirro concluding the day in tenth - but having been as high as third during the middle stages.

Between Dovizioso and Pirro were LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl and top CRT rider Randy de Puniet, fresh from his debut 1000cc Suzuki test at Motegi.

Pramac Ducati's Ben Spies, returning to action after missing the last two races due to his healing shoulder, finished day one in 16th for Pramac Ducati.
