Mapfre Aspar's Jonas Folger stole his first pole position of the season with a late dash on his Kalex KTM in Mugello Moto3 qualifying.
Following Maverick Vinales around the Italian circuit, Folger set a new lap record in the process.
For the 40 minute session the lightweight class enjoyed the sun beating down after enduring mixed, mainly wet conditions for most of their practice sessions.
This in turn caused climbing track temperatures, leading many of the riders to ditch their soft tyres for a harder compound Dunlop in the last fifteen minutes.
The final five minutes before the flag proved to be the most hectic, with Miguel Oliveira's time which had held since the opening minutes finally pushed aside by a flying Maverick Vinales, though the Team Calvo rider was then pushed into second by a well timed lap by Folger in his slipstream on their next lap.
Alex Rins continued the KTM domination of the top spots in qualifying by sealing the final place on the front row for the Estrella Galicia team.
Jack Miller equalled his career best previous qualifying performance, which was good enough for fourth on the grid for the Caretta Technology- RTG man. The Australian was also the highest placed Honda rider with his FTR bike.
Luis Salom found himself down in fifth after revealing that a screw in his wrist from an old injury had fragmented and was causing him pain.
The Spaniard was still the highest placed Ajo rider, with his Red Bull team-mates struggling for form. Zulfahmi Khairrudin starts 18th and Arthur Sissis 25th.
Portuguese rider Oliveira also improved his time to start sixth for the resurgent Mahindra team.
Niccolo Antonelli will be searching for his first finish of the season at his home track from seventh for the Go & Fun Gresini outfit, while Jakub Kornfeil continues his run of solid performances to start from eighth for Redox RW Racing GP.
