Marc Marquez has safely progressed to the final stage of qualifying for the Italian MotoGP after doing enough to top Q1 at Mugello.
The Spaniard, who found himself in the provisional drop zone after suffering his third crash of the weekend in FP3 earlier today, produced a lap good enough to see him go quickest in Q1, thus earning him a chance to challenge for a leading position in Q2.
He will be joined in moving to Q2 by Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith, who ran Marquez relatively close with a time just three tenths shy of the reigning Moto2 champion. Their efforts were enough to deny local favourite Andrea Iannone the chance to progress, the Italian compounding Pramac Ducati's dismal day following Ben Spies's withdrawal through injury.
Iannone will start 13th, with Randy de Puniet emerging as the best of the rest in the CRT class in 14th, ahead of Hector Barbera, Danilo Petrucci, Colin Edwards, Claudio Corti and Michael Laverty.
Aleix Espargaro will start as the highest-placed CRT rider after qualifying automatically for Q2.
