Mugello: Pole man Pedrosa makes his ‘one chance’ count

1 June 2013

Dani Pedrosa was pleased to notch up his 25th career MotoGP pole position after getting the most out of his final lap in a hectic Q2 session that threatened to leave him down the order.

The series leader spent much of Q2 struggling to find clear air in a session dominated by riders seeking a tow for their fastest laps, so much so that he was classified towards the bottom of the top ten for most of the 15mins.

With key rival Jorge Lorenzo heading the timesheets with a record-breaking lap, Pedrosa would be forced to wait until his final lap to unleash his response, the Repsol Honda rider duly going quicker still to snatch his first pole position of the year.

Reflecting on a 'hard' session, Pedrosa was happy to prevail in the end, though he was somewhat critical of the shuffling going on around the circuit.

“It was hard at the end, because I knew my previous lap was not good. I was down on the grid and I had only one more chance. I was also disappointed because many riders wanted to follow and nobody wanted to push.

“I knew one mistake[would mean] I wouldn't improve, but I just kept calm and focussed and finally I did a good lap time, faster than last year. It's good, we have improved the bike today and I hope to do a good race tomorrow.”
