Lorenzo on form in warm-up

Jorge Lorenzo fastest during warm-up for the Italian MotoGP at Mugello, big fall for injured Bradley Smith.
Jorge Lorenzo underlined his case for a third successive Italian MotoGP victory by leading morning warm-up at Mugello.

Pipped to pole at the last moment by championship leader Dani Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Yamaha again thrived in the cooler morning conditions.

Barring a brief interruption by Marc Marquez, reigning double title winner Lorenzo led most of the 20-minute warm-up, finishing 0.215s ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow, with sore Honda rookie Marquez +0.650s in third.

Lorenzo's best lap was a 1m 47.558s, under the official lap record and only 0.4s from Pedrosa's pole time. Lorenzo's team-mate and local hero Valentino Rossi took fourth place, with Pedrosa the last rider within one-second of Lorenzo.

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Ducati), Nicky Hayden (Ducati), Alvaro Bautista (Gresini Honda), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) and Randy de Puniet (Aspar) completed the second half of the top ten.

de Puniet fell during the session, as did rookie Bradley Smith.

Smith, seen struggling to put a glove on his injured hand, suffered a big highside at the same corner where he fell on Friday.

The rookie, who will already require a skin graft after the event, was also hit by the bike and although eventually able to walk away did not return to the track and did not record a time.

Ben Spies withdrew from the event on Saturday.
