Mugello MotoGP: Pedrosa salvages second, extends overall lead

3 June 2013

Dani Pedrosa says he is happy to be leaving Italy with an extended lead in the overall standings following a tougher-than-expected race day at Mugello.

Starting from his first pole position of the season, Pedrosa lost the lead to Jorge Lorenzo at the opening bend and though he was able to shadow the Yamaha rider for the first half of the race, he'd lose touch with little more than ten laps remaining.

From here, Pedrosa was forced into a resisting the attentions of Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez, who eventually made it through to second place with five laps to go. Nonetheless, with Marquez crashing out three laps shy of the chequered flag, Pedrosa would return to a second place he'd retain to the chequered flag.

Picking up 20 points for his troubles, Pedrosa was frustrated by the lack of grip but content to come away with a good haul of points nonetheless.

"I didn't feel fully comfortable in the race today, but I'm happy because I was able to gain a large number of points. In general, this was a difficult weekend. The back tyre was giving me a lot of problems with grip but taking 20 points from this race and maintaining the lead the World Championship is something positive."

Pedrosa now leads reigning champion Lorenzo in the overall standings by 12 points.
