Andrea Dovizioso is seeking an improved riding position to suit the characteristics of the Catalunya circuit in Spain.
Dovizioso was eighth fastest overall after today's first free practice sessions with a fastest lap time of 1m 42.988s.
“I think we have to try something different with the position of the bike for the characteristics of this track because the grip here is so low, especially after two or three laps – the tyre drops a lot for everybody,” he said.
“So you have to ride in a completely different way. Our pace is not bad… we are not too far but I had to fight too much with the bike and we have a few ideas to try tomorrow.
“We must re-evaluate the riding position because this track is quite different from Mugello and requires different solutions.
“We're not sure about the moved-back position, which had worked well at the test last week in Italy,” he added.
“For this reason, we tried a number of different set-ups.
“I think we can be faster, I hope, tomorrow.”
Dovizioso is committed to using the harder rear tyre to boost endurance in the hot conditions at Catalunya.
“I think everybody will go with the hard for the rear, but some riders can race also with the soft, but the potential is not so big,” he said.
“Normally everybody will go with the hard and we are working with the hard.
“We definitely must improve because the pace always increases in the race, and those who are best prepared do better.”
Dovizioso's best time left him 0.691s adrift of the fastest lap set by Valentino Rossi on the factory Yamaha YZR-M1.
