Moto2 Catalunya: Espargaro takes control for his home Grand Prix

Espargaro dominates the qualifying session to take pole by over half a second for the Catalunya Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Local rider Pol Espargaro moved his Pons Kalex into the top spot for round six of the Moto2 championship after his time of 1m 46.410 set early in qualifying in Catalunya could not be topped due to the increasing temperatures.

It is the Spanish rider's second pole of the season after also claiming pole for the opening round in Qatar. It also means there is a Spanish rider on top of the timesheets in every class for the Catalunya Grand Prix.

Current championship leader Scott Redding took second on the grid and finds himself sandwiched between the Pons team riders with Tito Rabat completing an all Kalex front row.

Takaaki Nakagami starts off the front row for the first time this season, the Japanese rider heads up the second row in fourth for the Italtrans team.

Joining him is the highest placed non-Kalex rider Alex De Angelis. NGM Forward Racing team's rider held on with a time he set right at the start of qualifying aboard his Speed Up machine, directly after which he crashed out at turn ten while on an even faster lap.

The fastest Suter rider Johann Zarco starts from sixth for the Came Iodaracing Project, he is followed by fellow Suter users Jordi Torres for Mapfre Aspar in seventh and Technomag carXpert rider Randy Krumennacher in eighth.

Sandro Cortese improved once again in qualifying, as he has done at every race so far. The reigning Moto3 champion will start from ninth for Dynavolt Intact GP.

Tom Luthi who had been fastest in practice had a disappointing session after looking to have a pole pace and could only place tenth for Interwetten Paddock.

British riders Danny Kent and Kyle Smith made the most of their knowledge gained from years racing in Spain with Kent 17th for Tech3 and Smith 18th for Blusens Avintia despite a late crash. Just thousandths separated the riders lower down the time sheets so the duo have a strong chance of scoring points in Sundays race.

Nico Terol, who found himself on the podium in Mugello was down in 20th for the Mapfre Aspar Team.
