Dutch MotoGP: Injured Jorge Lorenzo on way back to Assen!

Will Jorge Lorenzo try to ride in Saturday's Dutch MotoGP race?
UPDATE: Jorge Lorenzo has now arrived back at Assen and will undergo a medical test at 8am on Saturday morning to determine if he is fit to race.

MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo is on his way back to Assen - just one day after breaking his collarbone in a fast Thursday practice fall!

The Factory Yamaha star underwent surgery in Barcelona during the early hours of Friday morning, when a titanium plate and eight screws were used to secure the fragments of his left collarbone.

Rumours that Lorenzo may return were initially played down by Yamaha, but just as MotoGP final practice was getting underway Lorenzo himself Tweeted: "We come back to Assen! :)"

A subsequent statement from Yamaha confirmed Lorenzo's return to the Dutch TT, but made no comment on whether the Spaniard will try to start Saturday's race.

"After completing successful surgery last night Jorge Lorenzo was assessed by the medical team in Barcelona this morning and declared fit to fly," began the statement. "As a result the World Champion has made the decision to return immediately to Assen to spend the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend with his team.

"Lorenzo will leave from Barcelona at 3pm and arrive directly at Groningen airport.

"Further updates will be issued in due course."

Lorenzo, who has closed to within seven points of title leader Dani Pedrosa after wins at the last two rounds, would need to pass a medical to start the race. But if he did so, Lorenzo could line-up twelfth on the grid, having already qualified for the Q2 pole position shootout courtesy of his Thursday morning lap time.

Another option, if allowed to ride, is for Lorenzo to open a new engine and start from pit lane. Lorenzo has already opened four of his five engines for the 2013 season.

The 26-year-old double title winner broke his collarbone in a 200km/h highside during soaking wet conditions on Thursday afternoon. Race day at Assen, the oldest event on the MotoGP calendar, is always held on a Saturday.
