Dovizioso: We were riding on the limit
30 June 2013
Andrea Dovizioso will be hoping to make progress with the Ducati GP13 during a three-day test at Misano this week after struggling to break into the top ten in the Dutch MotoGP yesterday.
Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden finished 10th and 11th respectively at Assen, with both riders passed on the run from the final chicane by Bradley Smith after Dovizioso put a hard pass on his team-mate.
The duo will will be at Misano on Wednesday and Thursday during the test as Ducati aims to find solutions to make the Desmosedici more competitive.
Both riders suffered with a lack of traction at Assen and Dovizioso said he was riding to the limit in an effort to catch Alvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro, who both finished ahead of the factory Ducati riders.
“Considering the expectations, the race didn't go so badly. I followed Nicky for the entire race, and I rode really hard; it was so tough to do that pace here,” he said.
“The gap is still big, but compared to our gap in practice, we weren't as far back on lap times.
“We pushed hard for the whole race, taking risks to try and catch Espargaro and Bautista.
“We were able to do it, but unfortunately we were really at the limit and weren't able to battle with them.”
Dovizioso defended his overtaking move on Hayden at the final chicane, which ultimately allowed Tech 3 Yamaha rider Smith to pass both Ducatis on the run to the finish.
“In the last chicane, I made a pass on Nicky that was on the limit, but I don't think it was dirty.
“That chicane is famous for that, but unfortunately our battle on the brakes made us slow on the exit, and Smith passed us on acceleration,” he said.
“It's a shame, but it just shows our difficult situation. Let's say we limited the damage somewhat today.”
