Moto2: Redding 'still smiling' after last lap defeat

30 June 2013

Scott Redding came out second best in a final lap shootout with Moto2 title rival Pol Espargaro, but the British rider was still smiling after a thrilling race at Assen.

Redding led on the last lap but Tuenti HP40 rider Espargaro found a way through on his Kalex to take victory by a tenth of a second and reduce Redding's deficit slightly at the top of the championship.

Marc VDS Racing star Redding, who leads the standings by 30 points, took his last-gasp defeat on the chin.

“Normally I'd be disappointed with finishing second, but not today,” he said.

“It was a close race and it was good for me to know I could put pressure on Pol throughout, despite him having a bit of a speed advantage on the straight.

“I could pass him in sector one, but he'd just come back at me in sector two or sector four.

“In the end I went through and tried to pull a gap, because I knew it would be difficult to hold him off on the last lap if we were close,” added Redding.

“It was all going to plan, but then the bike jumped out of sixth gear and that was enough for him to close on me again.

“It was a close fight, and Pol made some hard moves on me, but I was smiling in my helmet for the whole race.”
