Home star Bradl leads FP2 - Lorenzo, Crutchlow checks

12 July 2013

UPDATE: Tweet from MotoGP.com: "Initial tests show damage to titanium plate in [Jorge Lorenzo's] left shoulder - could need further surgery."

Home hero Stefan Bradl set the pace during Friday afternoon practice for the German MotoGP - but all eyes were on the Medical Centre where both Jorge Lorenzo and Cal Crutchlow were undergoing checks.

Injured champion Lorenzo - riding less than two weeks after a claiming fifth with a broken collarbone at Assen - was flung from his Yamaha early in the afternoon, landing hard on his freshly plated shoulder.

That caused a red flag to retrieve his stricken M1, while Lorenzo headed straight for X-rays on his shoulder, the results of which are not yet known.

The Spaniard was soon joined in the Medical Centre by Crutchlow, who lost the front of his Tech 3 Yamaha at high-speed through the fearsome turn 11 downhill right-hander, shortly after the restart, leaving him with scrapes to his left arm.

Lorenzo had been quickest at the time of his highside and only three riders were able to lap quicker than the #99 despite his absence.

Bradl, still chasing his first MotoGP podium, took over from Lorenzo for the last 15 of the 45-minutes on the way to a 0.209s advantage over title leader Dani Pedrosa, leading Lorenzo by nine points and chasing his fourth successive Sachsenring win.

Third went to Pedrosa's rookie Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez (+0.221s), then Lorenzo (+0.222s) whose Yamaha team-mate and Assen winner Valentino Rossi was a close fifth (+0.365s).

Nicky Hayden saved a big tank slapper for the second session in a row, but later slid off his Ducati on the way to sixth (+0.542s).

The Desmosedicis of Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone had been heavily damaged in separate morning falls at turn 11, costing Dovizioso the chance to use the new Ducati chassis for the remainder of this weekend. Hayden only has the standard version.

Dovizioso was eighth this afternoon, behind the top CRT of Aspar's Aleix Espargaro (+0.733s). Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista and Iannone completed a top ten covered by less than one second, with Crutchlow's rookie team-mate Bradley Smith in eleventh and Aspar's Randy de Puniet in twelfth.

Cardion AB's Karel Abraham did not ride this afternoon due to 'flu and fever'.
