German Moto3: Pole for Rins, disappointment for Vinales

Alex Rins secures pole position in Saturday's qualifying session for the German Moto3 Grand Prix at the Sachsenring.

Alex Rins took his third pole position of the season, at the Sachsenring on Saturday, during a session filled with drama in the closing minutes.

The Spaniard's fastest lap of 1m 27.300 put him 0.180 ahead of nearest rival for pole Luis Salom.

Red Bull KTM rider Salom saw his push for pole end in dramatic style as his engine let go with just five minutes of the session remaining, forcing him to sit and watch events unfold, eventually holding on for second.

German wild-card Mahindra rider Luca Amato also had an engine failure moments later on his Mahindra, leading to oil flags being waved.

The front row is completed by Mahindra's Miguel Oliveira who found himself in a last lap race to the line with Caretta Technology-RTG rider Jack Miller and Team Calvo's Maverick Vinales.

The second row is headed up by home rider Jonas Folger who hit bumps at turn eleven after just minutes sending the German and his Mapfre Aspar bike in different directions.

Running back to the garage and showing no sign of injury, the damage to the Kalex KTM kept him out until there were 17 minutes of the session remaining. His taped together bike held up as Folger powered into fourth.

Miller was the fastest of the Honda riders and looked to be heading for a pole time when he got caught up with Vinales and Oliveira in the closing seconds leaving him fifth.

Vinales saw slow progress over the race weekend with his late push for the front row starting with a trip into the gravel at turn one with three minutes remaining, leaving him in traffic and down in sixth on the grid.

Seventh was claimed by the second Mahindra of Efren Vazquez ahead of San Carlo Team Italia rider Romano Fenati in eighth, the Italians best qualifying result of the year.

Ninth spot went to Jasper Iwema for RW Racing GP, in his best qualifying performance ever in Moto3.
