US MotoGP: Marquez ups the pace in FP3

Marc Marquez fastest during Free Practice 3 for the US MotoGP at Laguna Seca.
Rookie MotoGP title leader Marc Marquez defied another cool and misty morning at Laguna Seca to set the fastest lap of the US GP weekend so far.

Quickest on Friday, his very first day of riding at Laguna Seca, Marquez smashed the 1m 22s barrier midway through the Saturday session, putting him 0.6s clear.

That advantage was eventually cut down to 0.184s by Factory Yamaha's Valentino Rossi in the final minute, with LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl, runner-up to Marquez on Friday, in third (+0.391s).

Alvaro Bautista (Gresini Honda), Cal Crutchlow (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) completed a top six covered by 0.658s.

Marquez's Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa was absent, having chosen to again sit out the session. Reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo, also riding with a collarbone injury, was seventh quickest after completing eleven laps.

The top ten riders after FP3 (combined times) receive direct access to the second and final part of this afternoon's qualifying session. Pedrosa was just eleventh on Friday and will thus need to take part in Q1.

A 30-minute FP4 session will be held prior to qualifying.

American Blake Young, due to making his second wild-card appearance of the year with Attack Performance Racing, has withdrawn due to heavy bike damage in a Friday fall.
