Crutchlow eyeing podium, talks Indy circuit changes
18 August 2013
Cal Crutchlow feels he is in contention for a podium finish at the Indianapolis MotoGP despite being 'a bit disappointed' with fourth of the grid in qualifying.
The Tech 3 Yamaha rider had been a consistent top three contender in the run up to qualifying around the iconic 'Brickyard', but he would fall just shy of making it onto the front row.
With pole sitter Marc Marquez was in a class of his own, just three hundredths of a second split Crutchlow from both Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa ahead of him. Crutchlow has high hopes that he can overhaul at least one of the title contenders ahead of him on race day.
“I am a little bit disappointed not to be on front row because I've been inside the top three for most of the weekend,” he said. “The positive point though is I am much stronger than in the past here at Indianapolis and I am looking forward to the race.
“I've returned from the summer break and picked up where I left off in the first half of the Championship and a podium is not out of the question tomorrow.
“The Yamaha guys are still chasing the Hondas. It's going to be a difficult, long race tomorrow for us Yamaha guys, for sure. But I'm pleased with the progress we've made, and we'll see how it goes.
“Congratulations to Marc because he has been in awesome form all weekend and he produced another incredible lap in qualifying. Hopefully we can put up a fight against him but we still have to work more on the set-up and at the moment I haven't decided which tyre I will race.”
Looking beyond this Sunday's race, Crutchlow also spoke about the changes the riders would like to see made to the infield circuit. “We want to change the surface, for sure. We definitely want some corners changed, because to go around Turn 4 you might as well slip a clutch on the way out of it. It's not really that good.
"Then after Turn 5 until the end of the track, really, the surface is so slick you can't really pass. We can't run off line. If you run off line, you go into the grass, basically.
"We first and foremost want the surface changed. Then we want to see if we can change a little bit the first sector and the last sector.”
Asked how he would change Turn 4, Crutchlow replied: "Honestly, I'd run around the banking. F**k, why not? It'd be cool. I'd just run straight into Turn 1 around the banking, but no one else wants to do it. I don't know what's the matter with them. I thought it was a great idea.
"I think if we just open it up a bit more. If we open (Turn) 2 and (Turn) 3, so it's not as tight, then (Turn) 4 can be more of a sweeping corner."
