Espargaro: We’ll lose out more than usual at Brno
21 August 2013
After the 'blip' at Laguna Seca, Aleix Espargaro resumed his position as MotoGP's top performing CRT rider at Indianapolis.
However unlike at Austin, Jerez, Mugello, Catalunya, Assen and Sachsenring, the Aspar Aprilia star was not able to beat a factory prototype, finishing in twelfth place - one position and seven seconds from Pramac Ducati's Andrea Iannone.
Espargaro, who suffered a hand injury on Saturday at Indy, expects another tough task to take on the official machines this weekend at Brno.
“I really like the Brno circuit but if we are realistic we know it doesn't really suit the characteristics of our bike very well,” he said. “With so many long straights and fast corners we will definitely lose out more than usual to the factory prototypes but we will work as hard as we can anyway to be in the best possible shape for the race.
“Hopefully it is a more straightforward weekend than Indianapolis without any setbacks. We haven't had much chance for a rest but I have done my best to try and get over the injuries I picked up on Saturday and now I am looking forward to getting back on the bike, having fun and trying to get back to the level we know we can perform at.”
Espargaro is being linked to various teams running the new range of privateer machines for 2014, while Aspar are sure to want to retain the Spaniard to spearhead what they hope will be a bigger effort from Aprilia.
Aleix, whose younger brother Pol will step up to MotoGP with Tech 3 Yamaha next year, has scored 56 points so far this year - more than double the amount of the next best privateer, Avintia's Hector Barbera.
