Early Pedrosa exertions 'prevented final challenge'

2 September 2013

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa admitted his disappointment with third place in the British MotoGP at Silverstone as Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo closed the gap to the Spaniard in the championship table.

Lorenzo's hard-fought victory at Silverstone has left him within nine points of Pedrosa, who lost more ground on title pacesetter and Honda team-mate Marc Marquez.

Pedrosa, who made a poor start from fifth place on the second row, battled through to close a two-second gap to Lorenzo and Marquez and looked as though he had something in reserve until his challenge eventually faded.

He later revealed his exertions in the early stages had worn out his tyres and he had no grip when it mattered most at the end.

“I'm disappointed with the result today. I rode well but got a bad start and conceded a lot of seconds on the opening two laps, so I had to really push in order to recover ground,” said Pedrosa.

“I gradually caught up with Marc and Jorge, but I wore my tyres out in the process and at the end of the race I lacked grip on the right-hand corners.

“I tried to calm down and slow my pace in order to lower the tyre temperature, although finally I wasn't able to match their performance.

“That meant that when I attempted to pass the bike slid out a lot and I was unable to really get involved in the fight for the win,” he added. “I will have to give it another go at Misano.”
