Moto2: Salom, Vinales sign two-year Pons deals
11 September 2013
Moto3 championship rivals Luis Salom and Maverick Vinales will both graduate to Moto2 after signing for the Pons Kalex team until the end of 2015.
The pair will take the place of Pol Espargaro and Esteve Rabat. 2013 title contender Espargaro is moving to MotoGP with Tech 3 Yamaha, while Rabat is switching to Marc VDS.
Salom (Red Bull KTM) currently holds a 26-point advantage over Vinales (Calvo KTM) at the head of the Moto3 standings.
"For me it is an honour that Sito Pons gives me the opportunity to defend his colours in a category as demanding as Moto2," said Salom.
"I am convinced that with Sito and his team I will be able to settle as soon as possible in the new class. I will put every effort on my part to meet the expectations that my new team has placed in me.
"I am very happy, and now we have to keep working hard, ride with heart and intelligence to end this season a little better than last year."
Salom finished runner-up to Sandro Cortese last season, with Vinales third in the 2012 standings despite winning the most races. Vinales has won two rather than five races so far this year, after making the winter switch from Avintia Blusens, but has also been much more consistent.
"Joining Team Pons is a great pride and responsibility," said Vinales. "Right now my priority is to fight for the world championship in Moto3. It would be an honour for me to move up to Moto2 as world champion."
"Both Luis Salom and Maverick Viñales are quick, ambitious, competitive and with a natural talent for riding a bike," declared team owner and former world champion Sito Pons.
Pons also currently runs a third bike for his son Axel.
