Dani Pedrosa was unable to prevent his Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez from finishing ahead of him the San Marino MotoGP despite his best efforts.

Pedrosa held second place behind Jorge Lorenzo until Marquez came past in the closing stages and although his managed to briefly re-take the position, the young championship leader was eventually able to edge ahead to secure the runner-up spot.

Honda star Pedrosa is struggling with grip issues on the RC213V but believes he can challenge for race wins if the problem can be resolved.

"It was a hard weekend overall. I was struggling from the first day and couldn't really get a good feeling in the corners," he said.

"I pushed my best in the race. I started with a good motivation. I lost a lot in the first couple of laps but I tried to focus and do the perfect race, perfect corners every time.

"I had a good rhythm even though I wasn't feeling comfortable and at the end I had to battle with Marc. I made one mistake in the last corner and I just lost touch with three laps to go.

"But I pushed my best and today couldn't do any better," he added.

"In the last races always I struggle with the same thing.

"When I am riding with them in the races I always struggle for edge grip in the corners. When I am on full lean I cannot open the gas so I do not have so much corner speed, then after I have to go aggressive on the gas to recover.

"In the last races, when I was fighting with Jorge and Marc, I always see that I lack in this point. One or two races you may think it is set-up, but now four races it must be something else.

"If I can improve this tomorrow in the test then maybe we have the chance again to win races."

Pedrosa has been joined in second position with Lorenzo on 219 points, although Lorenzo moves ahead with a higher number of race wins this season.

The pair are 34 points adrift of Marquez with five championship rounds remaining.
