Hernandez: Today I rode the best bike of my life
17 September 2013
Yonny Hernandez completed his first laps as a Pramac Ducati MotoGP rider during Monday's official post-race test at Misano.
The Colombian has been drafted in to replace the injured Ben Spies in upcoming events, most likely until the end of the 2013 season, and has been given permission to make the move by PBM.
Hernandez completed a total of 65 Monday laps, the best of which was a 1m 36.277s, placing him 16th out of the 21 riders present.
“I am happy because this bike has much more power compared to the one I was used to, the electronics are totally different and I need to change my riding style to be faster, but today I rode the best bike of my life,” said Hernandez, who has been racing in the privateer CRT category, first with Avintia (FTR-Kawasaki) and then PBM (ART), since joining the premier class in 2012.
“I need to work hard, to learn a lot because the electronics are really different from CRT. I need to work hard on the feeling, and I'll do my best. I need to do a lot of kilometres to achieve a good pace for the race, but I am faster than with my other bike.
“It's too early to say anything, I need more time to learn, and to improve. I feel good physically right now, for a first day it has been not so bad. I need to understand this bike that is really different from mine and it has a lot of power too. I really thank Pramac and Ducati for the opportunity they have given me.”
Hernandez was 3.013s behind fastest man Marc Marquez (Honda) and 1.6s from the next closest Ducati of Michele Pirro, who replaced Spies in Sunday's race but needs to return to test riding duties.
Hernandez - best race finish of 13th so far this year - will make his Ducati race debut at the forthcoming Aragon round, at the end of this month. PBM are yet to announce his replacement, to ride alongside Michael Laverty, who switched from the PBM bike to Hernandez's full ART machine for Monday's test.
