Some scorching early laps proved decisive in terms of Jorge Lorenzo's victory in the recent San Marino MotoGP.
Lorenzo's opening Misano lap was a full 1.4s faster than championship leader Marc Marquez and 1.2s quicker than Dani Pedrosa.
It took until laps 4-6 for the Repsol Honda riders to start to match Lorenzo's pace, but by then it was too late and Lorenzo's Yamaha went on to win by 3.3s.
“Yes we need to improve,” rookie Marquez said of his early race performance. “It is one of my worst points at the moment and one of the strongest for Jorge.
“Casey [Stoner] did [fast early laps] with this bike, so we can. We need to try in practice and warm-up to be a bit more competitive in the start and the first laps.”
Pedrosa, third at Misano, added: “It is true that Jorge is starting very fast lately. He has improved his technique in recent years, but it is not true that every race he pulls away by two seconds in the first laps.
“Also many of my own wins have been in that way, so it's not something I can't do. But it is not always possible. It is a matter of being ready and feeling confident.”
Pedrosa slipped seven seconds behind Lorenzo by the finish at Misano, citing a lack of edge grip, an issue he worked on during the post-race test.
“In the test I worked a lot for more grip on the rear and wasn't able to be fully successful but we found some positive areas,” he said. “We have to try here in a different track and tyres and see if it works in a good way. It is not a big, big issue but sometimes something small can be good.”
Pedrosa and Lorenzo are now tied for second in the championship standings, but 34 points from Marquez. Asked about his biggest rival this weekend at Aragon, Marquez replied:
“Jorge has won the most races so maybe he is the strongest, but Dani won here last year and he will be very fast. We will try to do our best and be there with them.”
Marquez, beaten by Lorenzo at the last two rounds, dismissed suggesting that another win for Lorenzo could be a key moment in the championship. “All five remaining races will be so important, but this one is just another race. The points are all the same,” he said.
