Marquez: I just touched Pedrosa a little bit
30 September 2013
Rookie MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez made the following comments regarding the incident with team-mate Dani Pedrosa in Sunday's Aragon MotoGP.
Marquez broke the rear-wheel speed sensor on Pedrosa's Honda after light contact on lap six, causing Pedrosa to highside out of second place on the exit of the corner.
"Dani overtook me and then after two or three laps I saw that I was a little bit quicker," said Marquez.
"Before the back straight I was braking, I nearly touched him and then I picked up the bike [to go straight on] and I just touched him a little bit. But nothing and just I go wide [off the track].
"After the race the team told me that I touched a little bit his cable for traction control. It's a strange thing. Never happened. Then when he opened the gas he crashed. I cannot say much because that is so unusual."
Marquez admitted he felt bad for Pedrosa, who was celebrating his 28th birthday.
"I'm very disappointed. It is my team-mate. It is something that normally never happens, to touch the traction control cable. But in that situation immediately I picked up the bike and went off the track. I thought 'okay I will take a risk, but only for me'."
It is not the first time Marquez has out-braked himself while battling other riders, the 20-year-old making similar errors - without contact - at the previous San Marino round.
"After Misano I said, 'I will take care in that aspect'. But here the mistake was a little bit different, because I braked earlier but at that brake point you use a bit of banking. I locked the front a little so I immediately released the brake, and then I was too fast.
"But yeah, I need to be careful because already I did many mistakes. Some circuits are a little better, some worse. Especially after Misano I took more care and today the mistake was a little bit different... Sure it was my mistake, because I was behind. But the touch was like nothing."
After re-joining the circuit, Marquez closed down a two-second gap to Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo to claim his sixth win of the season.
However Race Direction has announced that the Marquez-Pedrosa incident is under investigation:
"Race Direction wishes to advise that the incident in the MotoGP race of the Gran Premio IVECO de Aragón 2013 involving the crash of rider number 26 Dani Pedrosa, is under investigation. This is the result of further technical information provided to Race Direction after the end of the race, which must be assessed.
"The announcement of a Race Direction decision on this matter will be made as soon as possible."
Marquez received two Penalty Points for ignoring yellow flags at Silverstone. Two more would mean a back of the grid start.
Asked for his opinion on the incident, third place Valentino Rossi joked: "I didn't see the crash, but I think Marc has to be penalised for two or three seasons! A lot easier for me!"
Pedrosa is 59 points from Marquez with four rounds to go, all but ending his title hopes. Lorenzo is 39 points behind.
