Aragon MotoGP: Crutchlow mystified by top speed struggle

'We lose more than 10km/h on the straight. We honestly don't know why because we used a new engine... you could clearly see on TV how much I was struggling' - Cal Crutchlow
Cal Crutchlow believes he still has a chance to battle for a podium finish before the end of the season after the Yamaha Tech 3 rider finished sixth at the Aragon MotoGP.

But the 27-year-old, who remains fifth in the championship standings, is concerned by a consistent lack of top-end speed at the Spanish track on his satellite M1.

British star Crutchlow was involved in a three-way battle for the last rostrum place with Valentino Rossi, Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl on Sunday, but was unable to challenge the trio in the closing stages, finishing 1.5 seconds behind Rossi in third.

“I am not unsatisfied with a top six result this weekend, I just think we are far from where we should be and that is clearly because we are lacking speed,” he said.

“We lose more than 10km/h every single lap on the straight and in acceleration and that is not good for us.

"We honestly don't know why also because we used a new engine since this morning and I really don't need to find excuses, because you could clearly see it on TV how much I was struggling.

“In any case we can still take quite a few positives out of this weekend, we had two days of track time less than the others and we don't have the seamless gearbox but we were still able to finish just 1.5 seconds behind Valentino, so we have not done a bad job,” he added.

“Now I am looking forward to the overseas and I am confident we can still fight for the podium this season.”

Careful Cal, announcing to the World via the BBC that Yamaha are deliberately giving you inferior equipment is not a good move, even if there are only three races left. After Nicky's stylish Q&A on Crash I think Ducati/Audi will be very nervous about you.

Much as I hate to say it he is talking out of his rear go to the motogp website and get some of the facts. He was down on speed but no by very much 1- 7 kph but most laps ~2kph. Cal has a problem he thinks he is better than he is! Motogp teams are not daft that is why he is gong to Ducati but good luck to him he will need it he did not have the measure of Dovi at tech 3!
