Moto3: Vazquez to Caretta-RTG Honda for 2014
1 October 2013
Efren Vazquez will switch from Mahindra to Honda machinery for the 2014 Moto3 World Championship, after signing for the Caretta Technology-RTG team.
The Spaniard, 27, has spent all seven of his grand prix seasons in the 125cc/Moto3 category, scoring four podiums for Derbi during the 2010-2011 seasons.
Vazquez is presently ninth in the championship on the much-improved Mahindra, built by Suter, but is now poised to take over the ride of Red Bull KTM-bound Jack Miller.
While many are predicting an exodus from Honda to KTM machinery next year, after a dominant season for the Austrian brand, Racing Team Germany (RTG) will continue with Hondas. Indeed, Honda will have a say in the second rider, due to be announced during the forthcoming Malaysian round at Sepang.
“I am pleased that, with Efren Vazquez, we were able to gain a fast and experienced rider for our team,” said RTG team principal and former grand prix racer Dirk Heidolf. “As usual, we will do our best in order to compete at the front of the World Championship. We are looking forward to a new challenge.”
Miller, the top Honda-powered rider, and team-mate Jon McPhee are seventh and 19th in the standings with four rounds to go.
Vazquez's team-mate Miguel Oliveira is sixth.
