Moto3: Khairuddin undergoes successful surgery

2 October 2013

Red Bull KTM Ajo's Zulfahmi Khairuddin intends to return to action at next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix following a successful wrist operation.

Khairuddin suffered a spill on the final laps at Aragon and sustained an articular fracture of his right radius, a fracture to his fourth metacarpus of the left hand and bruising to his lumbar.

The Moto3 star has undergone surgery in Barcelona carried out by Dr Xavier Mir, Director of Microsurgery and Hand Surgery at the Hospital Universitario Quirón Dexeus.

Khairuddin - currently tenth in the world championship standings - has had titanium screws inserted into the fractured bone and is now on course to compete in his home race.

Dr. Mir said: “The operation went very well. Fahmi had a fractured radius of his right wrist and we were able to secure the bone with a double fixation, using titanium screws.

“We think that we have done a good job. He also has a fractured fourth metacarpus of the left hand, but as there is no dislocation he will not require surgery for that.

“If he were a normal person, I would say that he would be out for a few weeks, but I have seen the determination that he has and I am sure that he will be ready to do well at the Malaysian Grand Prix.”

Khairuddin said he feared the worst following the spill in Spain but is now in optimistic mood ahead of the Sepang showdown.

“These haven't been the easiest of days, because after the crash at Motorland I feared the worst,” he said.

“However, the doctors told me that there was a chance that I could undergo surgery and still be fit for my home race at Sepang in a fortnight's time.

“I have to thank the medical team for their treatment and for everything that they have done for me. I am still sore –above all my back, but now I can't wait to fly to Malaysia and begin my rehabilitation,” he added.

“I am very excited about riding in front of my family, friends and home fans. It is a race for which I have been waiting all year.”
