Malaysian MotoGP: Hayden 'Things have changed, for sure…'

Gigi Dall'Igna's newly announced move from technical and sporting director of Aprilia to general manager of Ducati Corse looks to have complicated Nicky Hayden's 2014 MotoGP plans.

Departing factory Ducati star Hayden appeared set to join Aspar Aprilia, but - while the American insists he will remain in MotoGP - he says the rest is still undecided.

Without Dall'Igna at the helm, it seems the Aprilia ART project may not be such an attractive option. Meanwhile the Aspar team - which has dominated both seasons of the privateer CRT class with Aleix Espargaro and the ART - is now also linked with running the new Honda Production Racer.

“Of course some things have changed in the last weeks, for sure,” said Hayden of his 2014 plans. “Thought we were a bit closer to a deal than now. I'm definitely staying in MotoGP. Just still need to figure out what bike, what team and everything.

“It's farther in the year than I thought - figured I would have everything tied up by now, but that's not the case. So still gotta sort out the details and figure out where my next home is.”

Even before the Dall'Igna announcement, Hayden had confirmed the ongoing possibility of a Honda Production ride, telling Crash.net last time at Aragon: “It's true that I've had a lot of discussions with Aprilia and it's a definite possibility but nothing's official yet. The other possibility is a Honda customer bike.”

Hayden won the 2006 MotoGP title for Repsol Honda, although the other rumour is a privateer specification Ducati Desmosedici, run by Aspar.

Just one month remains until the end of the 2013 racing season and start of winter testing, at Valencia.

Wherever he goes NH will work hard, give his all for the team, be a good ambassador and he will never criticise his team in public.....unlike some others who forget how lucky they are to be in MotoGP

If Hayden stays in MotoGP he'll just fade away along with guys like Edwards. Before the advanced electronics of today, rider skill could pilot a fairly uncompetitive MotoGP bike onto the podium (look at Roberts Jnr on the KR211V in 2006 and Rossi on the M1 in 2004) but these days you need the best machine to make it onto the podium. The best machine can even be termed a satellite bike like Crutchlow's Yamaha and Bradel's Honda, but beyond that, no CRT bike has been competitive enough in a full race. I'd prefer to see Hayden move to WSBK where he could even win the championship there :)
