Refocused Marquez ready for second ‘match point’

22 October 2013

Marc Marquez says he has already turned his full attention to the penultimate round of the season at Motegi as he looks to firmly banish the frustrations of his exclusion from the Australian Grand Prix by sealing a historic MotoGP World Championship title.

Marquez was on the cusp of clinching the championship at Phillip Island, but his disqualification for not coming into the pit lane to serve a mandatory pit stop - introduced due to tyre longevity concerns - has instead seen his lead whittled to 18 points over Jorge Lorenzo.

Even so, with just two rounds remaining, Marquez remains fairly well placed to wrap up the title early on Honda's home soil in Japan, the Spaniard knowing he will be crowned champion should he out-score countryman Lorenzo by at least eight points – the difference between Marquez winning and Lorenzo finishing third.

Even so Marquez, who won the Motegi race en route to the Moto2 World Championship title in 2012, maintains he is simply focused on performing to his best in Japan.

“Obviously I'm disappointed after Phillip Island, but these things can happen. The important thing is that once again, we showed we were there for the fight and were competitive. Now we must put it behind us and concentrate on Motegi.

“Track conditions can vary quite a lot and we will work hard on the set up in terms of the hard acceleration and braking, which is an area we have improved now. We will work hard from the beginning, following our normal programme and push 100% to recover after Australia"
