Marc Marquez pulled out a new official Valencia best lap to retake the top spot from title rival Jorge Lorenzo during Saturday morning practice for the MotoGP title showdown.

A sliding Marquez beat Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa's 2012 pole time on his penultimate lap, displacing reigning champion Lorenzo from the top by 0.113s.

Lorenzo's Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi was third (+0.230s) and Pedrosa fourth (+0.520s), with fifth place Cal Crutchlow over one-second from Marquez for Monster Yamaha Tech 3.

Despite leading much of the second half of the session, Pedrosa - like Crutchlow - did not improve on his best Friday lap in the cooler morning conditions, when Marquez fastest time was set with the softer rear tyre.

Sixth this morning, and on combined practice times, was Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista (+1.051s) with LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl just 0.037s further back. Nicky Hayden (+1.205s) was top Ducati at the start of day two of his final Desmosedici weekend, with team-mate Andrea Dovizioso and Tech 3 rookie Bradley Smith completing the FP3 top ten.

On combined times, Smith is eighth fastest and therefore easily made the Q2 cut, with Hayden and Dovizioso claiming the final places. Fellow Ducati riders Andrea Iannone, Michele Pirro and Yonny Hernandez will be forced to take part in Q1, as will Aspar's top CRT rider Aleix Espargaro, newly confirmed at Forward Racing and twelfth on combined times.

Marquez, who led both of Friday's practice sessions, holds a 13-point lead over Lorenzo heading into Sunday's title decider.
