World Supersport champion Sam Lowes made a highly impressive Moto2 debut during private testing at Jerez on Thursday.
Riding alongside most of the 2014 grid, the young Englishman - who has signed for Speed Up - set the seventh fastest lap time, just 0.406s behind Suter pace setter Thomas Luthi!
Between Luthi and Lowes on the Thursday timesheets were Jordi Torres (Suter), Mika Kallio (Kalex), Takaaki Nakagami (Kalex), Tito Rabat (Kalex) and Nico Terol (Suter).
Lowes - already under his Jerez WSS pole time - was not only the quickest Speed Up rider, but comfortably the best of the class rookies.
Moto3 champion Maverick Vinales and former title rival Luis Salom were 18th and 23rd respectively on day one, riding for the title-winning Pons Kalex team.
Another high profile rookie, American Superbike champion Josh Herrin, was ranked 20th as the new Caterham (Suter) team also made its Moto2 debut. Herrin's team-mate Johann Zarco claimed twelfth.
Former MotoGP star Loris Capirossi is testing the Speed Up alongside Lowes.
