Moto3: Ryan joins Calvo for CEV title challenge, GP wild-cards

Wayne Ryan to contest Spanish CEV series with reigning Moto3 World Champion's Team Calvo – deal includes grand prix wild-cards
Wayne Ryan, who made his grand prix debut as wild-card in last year's British Moto3 round at Silverstone, has joined Team Calvo (KTM) to challenge for the hotly contested 2014 Spanish CEV Moto3 Championship.

The Calvo deal also guarantees one or more world championship wild-card outings and a presence at the single round FIM European Championship.

The British teenager has raced in the CEV for two seasons in the British run Racing Steps Foundation KRP outfit, finishing ninth in the 2013 standings with one victory to his name. Ryan also finished 30th on his GP debut on a KRP-Honda at Silverstone (pictured).

Despite changing teams Ryan will continue his association with the Racing Steps Foundation who will fund and manage him for the upcoming season. The organisation has previously nurtured the likes of John McPhee, now competing full time on the world stage.

2013 proved Team Calvo's pedigree as they helped Maverick Viñales clinch the Moto3 World Championship and came excruciatingly close to winning the national series, where Alejandro Medina suffered a mechanical failure during the final race while in a championship winning position.

Acknowledging he must aim to fight for the title in 2014, Ryan said: “This is a big step for me. I have spent two years completing my apprenticeship last two years and I think now is the time to take all the experience and show what I'm really capable of.

“I got my first victory in the CEV at the start of the 2013 season but then obviously things were not in the direction we expected mainly due to the difference in power that we tried to overcome.

"But this year there can be no such excuses. The Racing Steps Foundation has signed me up with a top team on a top bike, so there can only be one target - and that's to win the title," he said.

Calvo team manager and former grand prix winner Pablo Nieto added: “It is a privilege and a pleasure to be working with one of the Racing Steps Foundation's riders. Wayne is a great talent so together I think we can achieve some fantastic results in 2014.

"The Foundation is doing an amazing job with the riders and drivers it supports. So we take it as a big compliment that we at Calvo have been selected to join them in helping Wayne to progress in the CEV and to the next stage in his career."

According to weekly Spanish publication Motociclismo, Ryan will have his first contact with his new bike and team at a two day test in Almeria at the beginning of February. The name of the team's second rider has yet to be announced.
