Bradley Smith closed to within striking distance of Yamaha's top factory riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo with an improved display on Wednesday.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider signed off in seventh place behind Lorenzo and only three hundredths of a second behind the two-time MotoGP world champion after a lap in 2m 00.603s.

British star Smith, who is entering his second season with the French outfit following his debut in the premier class in 2013, made a substantial improvement on his time from Tuesday's opening day of the test, gaining 1.2 seconds on the satellite YZR-M1.

"I analysed a lot of the new electronic ideas, the Bridgestone tyres, and the new suspension settings, all were very positive. I also did a kind of race simulation," Smith said.

"This was 15 laps just to try and understand the fuel consumption, and also to understand the physical point of view and where I need to improve my preparation. All in all we made a good step, especially compared to yesterday.

"I lowered my lap time by 1.2 seconds and moved up to seventh position, which was only six tenths behind Marc Marquez - it is obviously still a bit, but considering how close we are to Jorge and Valentino, I am happy with the work we have done."

Smith's new team-mate and reigning Moto2 world champion, Pol Espargaro, was tenth quickest with a time of 2m 01.061s
