Moto3 world champion Maverick Vinales leapt to the top of the timesheets during Thursday's final day of official Moto2 testing at Valencia.

However the Pons Kalex star couldn't beat this week's fastest overall lap, set by Marc VDS Kalex rider Esteve Rabat on Wednesday.

Vinales had been sixth fastest after the opening two days, but chopped half-a-second from his best time during blustery Thursday conditions.

That put the young Spaniard - who seized a last gasp Moto3 title victory at the same Valencia circuit last November - just 0.035s ahead of Takaaki Nakagami, who remains with Kalex machinery but has moved from Italtrans to Honda Team Asia for 2014.

On combined lap times, Vinales was second to Rabat by 0.147s with Nakagami 0.182 from the top in third.

"I felt very comfortable with the bike during these three days, the team understands me very well and this is helping me adapt to Moto2," said Vinales "I am trying hard to understand the Kalex and what the bike needs to go fast. Here we were fast and everything felt good. Now we head to Jerez to continue gaining experience and getting more miles."

Interwetten's Thomas Luthi ran in the top three on each day, but was bumped to fourth (+0.267s) on combined times.

Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt), Jordi Torres (Aspar), Mika Kallio (Marc VDS), Nico Terol (Aspar), Julian Simon (Italtrans) and Luis Salom (Pons) completed the Kalex/Suter top ten sweep, all covered by 0.689s.

Reigning World Supersport champion Sam Lowes moved forwards from 17th to twelfth on the final day, a position he replicated on the overall times. Speed Up rider Lowes was the final rider within one-second of Rabat.

The new Caterham team saw its riders Johann Zarco and Josh Herrin claim 13th and 18th overall respectively, with Marcel Schrotter the top Tech 3 rider in 19th out of the 31 competitors to complete a lap.

Gino Rea concluded the test in 27th place, the AGT-Rea Racing rider returning to the circuit on Thursday despite suffering a fractured foot bone on day two.

The next official Moto2 test takes place at Jerez from February 18-20.
