Having set the fastest overall lap last week at Valencia, new Marc VDS rider Esteve Rabat concluded the first day of official 2014 Moto2 testing at Jerez on top of the timesheets.

The Spaniard rode his Kalex to a best lap of 1m 42.747s during the third and final session of the day, which began on a damp track, putting Rabat under the official race lap record and just 0.041s from Stefan Bradl's 2011 best lap.

As at Valencia, Thomas Luthi was the leading Suter rider, the Swiss setting the second best Tuesday lap, 0.242s from Rabat.

Mika Kallio made its two Marc VDS riders in the top three, albeit half-a-second from Rabat, with reigning World Supersport champion Sam Lowes an impressive fourth (+0.702s) on the Speed Up chassis.

Fellow star Moto2 rookie Maverick Vinales, the Moto3 world champion and quickest on the final day at Valencia, was just 0.095s slower for Pons Kalex. Takaaki Nakagami (Kalex), Sandro Cortese (Kalex) and Julian Simon (Kalex) followed.

Forward Racing had missed the Valencia test, but Simone Corsi gave the new 'Forward KLX' chassis, based on the 2013 Kalex, a competitive debut with ninth and the final rider within one-second of Rabat.

Testing at the Spanish Grand Prix venue concludes on Thursday evening.
