Aleix Espargaro picked up where he left off at Sepang as the NGM Mobile Forward Racing 'Open' class rider went second overall on day one of the Sepang II MotoGP test.
Espargaro shone on the FTR-M1 at the first Sepang shakedown earlier this month and maintained his impressive pace, lapping in 2m 00.900s – a time that put him within 0.052s of Alvaro Bautista on the Gresini Honda.
His team-mate, Colin Edwards, was 14th fastest, 1.895s down on Bautista.
Espargaro said: “I'm happy of today's result. It was important to work on the set-up of the second bike and we did it. During the morning session I did only few laps because I couldn't push as I wanted.
“We worked also on the electronics and things improved in the afternoon. This is just the first day, tomorrow we will continue working on the second bike.”
Edwards, who had been the fastest Open ride rider during the morning session, added: “The track was very dirty this morning and I couldn't push as I wanted. This afternoon the track conditions were better but I couldn't find a good feeling and I was not so comfortable entering the corners.
“We tested several solutions, but I couldn't improve my lap time. We will continue working later today to find something to make a step forward tomorrow.”
