Scotsman John McPhee continued his strong opening to the 2014 Moto3 season with the RTG rider consistently among the leading group of riders throughout the opening day in Texas.

While he dropped back to 12th fastest in the second session, from ninth in FP1, he was pleased with the progress made by the team and that there was more to come from the bike tomorrow.

"It was good today and in the first session we found a good rhythm from the beginning and didn't have to make many changes," said McPhee.

"We just kept going and did some laps. In the second session we went a bit lower but I was looking to find a good rhythm. The position was a bit low but the lap time was faster so that's important for me.

"Coming here last year it wasn't a good race for us so this was a bit of a worry but to be inside the top ten was a good day."

Having made such a significant improvement over the last 12 months McPhee singled out the work done over the winter to find a better base setting. This is in stark contrast to the issues that affected the team so badly last year where an early season crash left him severely hamstrung throughout the season:

"This year we got a good base from the first session and it's been really good. We kept that setting in Qatar and it seems to be working well here too. As long as we can keep in the top ten and improve session by session I'll be happy."
