- Marc Marquez continues stranglehold on Austin weekend, but rivals edge closer.
- Bradley Smith top Yamaha as Lorenzo, Rossi left at tail end of top ten.
- Alvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro among those to miss top ten cut for automatic Qualifying 2 entry.
MotoGP champion Marc Marquez continued to rule the timesheets during FP3 for the Americas MotoGP on Saturday morning.
The cooler morning conditions meant Marquez switched to medium compound rear tyre on his Repsol Honda for much of the session - and came within a few hundredths of setting the fastest ever COTA lap, set by the #93 in qualifying last season.
The 21-year-old Spaniard then ran the hard rear at the end of the session and effectively matched his quickest lap time. Marquez looks certain to race with the harder rubber - as used for his debut win as a rookie one year ago.
The only minor consolation for Marquez's rivals was that his advantage shrunk slightly, from 1.005s to 0.745s, with LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl taking up the pursuit of last year's inaugural Austin winner.
Dani Pedrosa repeated his Friday third place, clawing a few tenths closer to team-mate Marquez (+0.888s) and - as last year - looks more comfortable on the medium rear.
Andrea Dovizioso again made the most of the special soft rear available to Ducati and the Open class for fourth, with Bradley Smith outpacing the Factory Yamahas for fifth and the final rider within one-second of Marquez.
Andrea Iannone took seventh for Pramac, with Jorge Lorenzo making a big time improvement over Friday but still only seventh on the Movistar M1. Valentino Rossi was less than 0.140s slower but only just made the top ten cut, with Ducati's Cal Crutchlow -unhappy at the end of the session - and Tech 3 rookie Pol Espargaro between the Factory Yamaha team-mates.
The top ten riders after FP3 (combined times) receive direct access to the second and final part of this afternoon's qualifying session. Those missing out include op Open class rider Aleix Espargaro and Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista.
Aspar's Hiroshi Aoyama was the top open class Honda rider in 14th, followed by Gresini rookie Scott Redding and home star Nicky Hayden (Aspar). Hayden suffered more technical problems, pulling off in the opening minutes and later saving a big moment with his elbow.
Hayden and countryman Colin Edwards (17th) were the only riders not to improve this morning.
