Marc Marquez obliterated the pole record at the Circuit of The Americas by a quarter of a second to claim the top spot for Sunday's Austin MotoGP.

The young Spaniard had been dominant throughout free practice and wasted no time in putting down a marker in Q2, shattering his pole record on his second lap by 0.135s despite almost tucking the front end of his Repsol Honda RC213V.

And there was more to come as Marquez, who claimed his maiden premier class victory in Texas in 2013, improved his time again on his penultimate lap to a 2m 02.815s lap before raising the bar further on his final circuit, setting a new record in 2m 02.773s.

His team-mate, Dani Pedrosa, was second fastest and 0.289s behind with Stefan Bradl completing the front row on the LCR Honda, 0.423s down on Marquez.

NGM Forward Racing's Aleix Espargaro was the leading Yamaha rider as he slotted into fourth position after earlier squeezing into Q2, 0.467s behind Marquez.

Espargaro faced an anxious wait to progress to the final qualifying session when Scott Redding produced a brilliant final lap in Q1 on the Drive M7 Aspar RCV1000R, losing out by only 0.074s.

Alvaro Bautista set the pace in Q1 on the Gresini Honda, but had to make do with a fourth row start after ending Q2 in 12th position.

Movistar Yamaha pair Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino join Aleix Espargaro on the second row after finishing fifth and sixth respectively, with Rossi only 0.001s behind his team-mate.

Ducati's Cal Crutchlow heads up row three, over half a second behind Rossi, followed by fellow Briton Bradley Smith on the Tech 3 Yamaha, with Pramac Ducati's Andrea Iannone eighth.

Andrea Dovizioso, Pol Espargaro and Bautista completed the top 12.

MotoGP rookie Redding was the leading Open class Honda rider in 13th position in front of Nicky Hayden, with Yonny Hernandez 15th on the Energy T.I. Pramac Ducati.

Colin Edwards starts from row seven at his home race on the second of the NGM Forward Yamaha machines, lining up with PBM pair Michael Laverty and Broc Parkes, who were 20th and 21st respectively.
