Austin Moto2: Turn one victim Lowes consoled by 'mega pace'

"I'm gutted but I'll take a lot of positives from today" - Sam Lowes.
Sam Lowes finished a disappointed 16th in Sunday's Austin Moto2 race, having been an unfortunate victim of a first corner accident that saw five riders fall when Josh Herrin went in too deep.

Speaking to after an eventful race Lowes said that any injuries from the accident were largely superficial with bruising on his hip causing some discomfort initially.

"The crash knocked the wind out of me and it took me a bit to get my breath back," commented the reigning World Supersport champion. "It wasn't too bad, I hit hip but after a few minutes it was alright. The right handlebar was a bit damaged so it took a few laps to get used to that."

The incident saw Lowes drop to the back of the pack and finish the first lap a distant last, having lost over 30s. Over the course of the race however he did well to pick off some of the backmarkers and gradually ease his way into the battle for 15th and the final point.

"Herrin came up the inside, he came and apologised afterwards, but I had nowhere to go and my bike was at the bottom of the pile so I lost 32s on the first lap. I finished 50s off the winner,” said Lowes, confirming his top ten potential.

“The pace compared to qualifying was mega, I was faster on the last lap than in qualifying, and every lap was good and consistent. I'm 100% confident that I would have been top ten and maybe even better today which would have been good for the first time here at a tough track to learn. I'm gutted but I'll take a lot of positives from today."

Despite the incident, it has been an encouraging start to the season for Lowes, who finished sixth for Speed Up on his Moto2 debut in Qatar. The next round of the championship will see Lowes on a more equal footing to his rivals courtesy of the brand new circuit in Argentina.

Sam was hard on himself but honest and shows he's thinking about his racing. He blamed himself for putting himself in a bad pack position after a lack lustre quali. As he said.. If he'd qualified better he'd have been out of the lower mid pack melee and traffic jam at T1. Given he's on a less fancied chassis and is new to the circuit though I agree he's being tougher on himself than anyone else. Can't fault the lads attitude and application though! He's got speed and is analytically and critically examining how he can avoid this happening to him again by being proactive. Far better than just throwing a fit and bawling out Herrin for the collision and learning nothing from it.
