For Bradley Smith it's a case of onwards and upwards after a career best fifth place and top Yamaha in the Austin MotoGP.

Smith has shown impressive form in the opening events of his second MotoGP season, producing a debut front row start and podium challenge prior to a fall in Qatar, before going the distance in Texas.

In Argentina on Thursday the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider made clear that his sights are set on being the top satellite rider - with one eye on the podium:

"It's still not exactly where I want to be right now, but I'll take the fifth position absolutely and we plan to do a better result this weekend. That's all I can do right now. I need to be as close to the factory guys as possible and next time ahead of Stefan [Bradl]!

"After a good performance in Qatar it was nice to go to Austin where I'd struggled a lot last year and get the result. But I feel it was again an opportunity missed for the podium, although looking at the front tyre issues, maybe if I pushed harder at the beginning of the race I would have had the same problems as Valentino."

Having joined most of his fellow riders in taking an exploratory look at the new Termas de Rio Hondo circuit by scooter, Smith is reserving final judgement until after first MotoGP practice on Friday

"It's so difficult to say when you're riding around on a scooter. I'm really excited to get out on track tomorrow and get more of an idea. I think a couple places are quite tight and twisty while other places are fast and flowing. Based on what I'm told the grip it is supposed to be good. Bridgestone have brought quite hard tyres so they obviously expect high load, high demand and high grip from the racetrack."
