Argentina MotoGP: Bridgestone insists tyres 'well suited'

While many riders expressed concern at the rapid loss of tyre grip during day one of the inaugural MotoGP event at Argentina's Termas de Rio Hondo circuit, Bridgestone is confident its rubber is 'well suited' for the 25-lap race.

With memories of last year's Phillip Island disaster still fresh, when unpredicted stresses on the tyres from new asphalt forced a compulsory mid-race bike swap, many riders were concerned by the high wear rate which caused lap times to drop by several seconds.

“I have many problems with the rear tyres. Soft and hard. I think it is impossible for the race, because after five laps they are destroyed,” Andrea Iannone told the official MotoGP website. “The bike has no grip and it is very difficult to have control. But I will raise it with the Safety Commission and try to find a solution for tomorrow.”

The dusty circuit exacerbated the tyre wear problems but should improve as the weekend goes on.

Unlike at Phillip Island, Bridgestone also has prior data from four riders testing at the circuit last July and Tyre Development manager Shinji Aoki insists the tricky conditions were 'as expected'.

“Conditions were as we expected today, with the sandy track surface causing high rear tyre wear and low grip levels. This problem was compounded by low track temperatures in the morning which resulted in some tyre graining, but we knew that conditions here would get better session-by-session," said Aoki.

“For FP2 the track showed signs of improvement and this resulted in better tyre wear and greater grip which helped the riders significantly improve their lap times.

“All rear slick options were used today, as well as the soft and medium compound front slicks, and our allocation for this weekend seems to be well suited to what is quite a challenging track for tyres.”

Iannone and the other Ducati riders could suffer most this weekend, since they are running under the Open class tyre rules - meaning their rear tyres are one level softer than the rest of the Factory class.

This means that while the Hondas and Yamahas have the medium and hard rear tyres on offer this weekend, Ducati and the Open class riders have only the soft and medium to choose from.
