Andrea Dovizioso finished an impressive fifth on the Ducati Desmosedici GP14 in FP2 at the Argentina MotoGP despite only completing 11 laps in the session.

The Italian rider was forced to switch to his second machine after a spectacular engine failure at the Termas de Rio Hondo track on his fourth lap.

Undeterred, Dovizioso managed a best time of 1m 41.042s on a soft tyre and remains optimistic of his chances for the rest of the weekend.

"It was a bit of a lively session for me. We didn't have the opportunity to do many laps because of my Desmosedici's engine problem, and on a new track you always need to do so," Dovi said.

"Despite this I managed to be fast here, and I think I've been able to interpret this track pretty well. For sure the times will drop tomorrow, but we all have a big problem with tyre wear and at the moment it's very difficult for everybody to do 25 laps for the race.

"I hope the track conditions improve tomorrow. At the beginning today it was like riding in the wet! I set my time on a soft tyre, because when I was using the harder [medium] tyre I had a problem with the engine. For sure we will race with the harder tyre. I don't think we will suffer from not having the hardest tyre [like the Factory class]."

Being just the third round of the season, the loss of an engine at such an early stage would normally be a cause of great concern for a Factory entry.

However revised rules for this year have seen Ducati handed the same engine, tyre, race fuel and testing concessions as the Open class. That means the Desmosedici riders each have twelve rather than five engine changes available for this season.
