Dani Pedrosa will start the Argentina MotoGP on the front row but the Repsol Honda had hoped for a faster time in Q2 as he slotted into third place.

Marc Marquez's imperious pole time of 1m 37.683s was in a different league to the opposition, though Jorge Lorenzo managed to split the Honda riders as the Movistar Yamaha contender edged out Pedrosa for second place.

Pedrosa, whose time of 1m 38.651s was 0.968s behind Marquez and 0.226s slower than Lorenzo, said: "Qualifying did not go perfectly. I wasn't as fast as I wanted to be and I know that I made a few mistakes, especially a big one in the final corner, which hindered me a lot.
