Aleix Espargaro says striving for a podium in the Spanish Grand Prix remains his 'priority', despite taking advantage of the 'super soft' Bridgestone tyres to post the quickest lap time of free practice day in Jerez.

The first outing for the 'super soft' tyre this season, Espargaro was in fine form during the cooler FP1 session to put in two laps that were not only comfortably quicker than the opposition in that session, but would continue to hold firm to the end of the day when temperatures rose and grip worsened.

Indeed, though the softer tyre for the Open class machines has raised doubts over whether the Forward Yamaha can sustain such a pace over a race distance, Espargaro maintains that he spent much of his day working on race set-up with the harder tyre in an effort to target the 'dream' podium on home soil he feels he is capable of.

"I'm satisfied of how we started here in Jerez. This morning we found a good set up and I was able to push from the beginning. In the afternoon the track was very slippery due to the torrid temperatures and it was more difficult to push as I was losing the front, especially with the soft tyre.

"The most important thing is that we have a good pace with the hard tyre and that we lapped with the full tank. We will keep on working in preparation of the race. It's great to close the first day on top but my priority is to get a good result in the race and a podium is my target as well as my dream."
