While Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi was deeply disappointed with his tenth place on the opening day of the French MotoGP, Jorge Lorenzo confirmed he is in better shape than his seventh position suggests.
Unlike Rossi, Lorenzo set his best lap time on lap 7 of a 9 lap run and was only 0.6s from the best of the day by world champion Marc Marquez, whose time came while using the same soft rear tyre during a brief three-lap run.
Lorenzo later revealed he had also used the same tyre for the whole session:
"I'm satisfied with the pace which is constant and with my riding.
"We are not in a position that reflects our performance; we were fastest for half of the session, then we stayed on the same tyre for all of practice, while the riders that finished in front of us put on a new tyre at the end or ran the [extra-soft] Open tyre.
"I think with a new tyre we could have improved half a second at the end and been first or second."
