Why Michelin decided on MotoGP return

Dorna today (Thursday) announced that Michelin will take over from departing former rival Bridgestone as official MotoGP Tyre Supplier from 2016.

Having chosen not to submit a bid for the original 2009 single tyre contract - "Michelin is leaving MotoGP because there is no longer competition in the area of tyres" - motorsport director Pascal Couasnon has explained why the time is right to return.

“Our policy of carrying over our technologies from track to street fits perfectly with the new technical regulations which are due to be introduced in 2016 and which will dictate the use of 17-inch wheels,” said Couasnon. “That is why Michelin decided to submit a bid following the tender process instigated by Dorna Sports.”

The current MotoGP wheel size is 16.5-inch.

“We take this opportunity to thank the governing bodies for the confidence they have placed in us today. Their confidence recognises Michelin's expertise and the 26 Riders' world titles it has secured,” Couasnon added.

Michelin claimed its first premier-class motorcycle grand prix victory with Jack Findlay in 1973 and had taken 360 wins by the time it left MotoGP at the end of 2008.

Michelin's most recent MotoGP title was with Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden in 2006, before losing its long-held supremacy to Bridgestone during the next two seasons.

A single ECU system will also be introduced in 2016.

I think you'll find the contact patch size increases with radius. Otherwise the patch size would be approaching infinite as the radius approached zero and scooters would corner properly.

Well, anyone who races won't be too surprised by this... they've been dropping the 16.5 for a long time now, ppl with those wheels have to pretty much special order their tires here. I for one would prefer they changed road bikes to 16.5 than making race bikes go to 17... but who am I to say anything other than a consumer of their products?!
